Shropshires

Picture
The Shropshire breed originated in the hills of Shropshire, North Staffordshire, England during the 1840's.
They were imported to Canada in the 1860's. They were one of the country's most popular breeds but declined drastically after the 1950's.
Part of their demise was actually their initial claim to fame of having wool from the tip of their nose to their toes.  As the demand for wool decreased, so did their popularity due to the wool on their heads. They are listed on Rare Breeds Canada's Conservation list as endangered
 (31 - 100 purebred registrations per year).
Characteristics: Very hardy, Docile, Good mothers, Longevity

What we offer
Purebred Shropshire breeding stock that perform both in the show ring as well as in the barn. All our stock is selected and genotyped for Scrapie Resistance. We select for breed type, soundness, mothering ability, as well as the ability to grow out with little feed input. Our lambs that do not fit into our selection criteria for breeding stock consistently receive top dollar at the sales barn. Our freezer freezer lamb is mild-tasting and tender.

Shropshire rams make excellent terminal sires in commercial flocks
